In preparation for the 2024 election, I participated in Design for Democracy, a civic engagement initiative that was created by AIGA (American Institution of Graphic Arts.) Using design as tool to promote voter education, interest, and activity, I developed a poster that resonates with people who are interested, or practice, spirituality. To do this, I used a tarot card as the focus of my poster.

All of the text was done by me using the pen tool, as I wanted the words to feel personal when someone was viewing it. A bristle effect was added on the stroke of each word to create a hand-drawn effect to further this idea, and emphasize that the message was coming from another human. The design and caption for my poster revolves around the ‘Wheel of Fortune’ card. The caption, “Fate is in your hands,” along with the graphic of a hand holding the card, encourages the mindset that people hold power with their choices. The ‘Wheel of Fortune’ represents fortune, change, cycles, and decisive action, which was fitting for the subject matter. I chose to make the hand purple, the ambiguous color allowing the audience to view the poster from their perspective no matter their skin tone. The wings on the bottom of the card are a nod to the bald eagle, a symbol of freedom. The ‘I Voted’ pin takes the place of the traditional wheel of fortune, and the ‘X’ that is at the top of the tarot card, to show that it is the tenth card in the Major Arcana, is replaced with the roman numerals for 2024.
